IRONMAN announces change to 20-meter draft zone

From 1st March 2026, the IRONMAN professional draft zone has changed from 12 metres to 20 metres. What does this mean and what difference might it make?

Drafting is the practice of riding closely behind another cyclist to gain an aerodynamic advantage by reducing wind resistance and energy expenditure by up to 40%. By increasing the drafting distance, they are attempting to ensure the cycling leg of the race is fairer and an entirely solo effort.

“When we began our research in mid-2025, our goal was to move beyond opinion and invest in principled and rigorous testing that could provide us with the objective insights needed to make a sound decision for the future of the sport,” said Scott DeRue, CEO of The IRONMAN Group. “The data produced through this process delivered clear insights that a 20-meter draft zone meaningfully impacts race dynamics in the ways that uphold the integrity of our sport. Based on those findings, we are confident this change represents the right next step for the evolution of fair and competitive racing at the professional level.”

However, age-group draft zone distances will remain the same. They stated that the difference in racing speeds and course density meant the 12-metre draft zone continued to be effective.
